The city of Dendera, also known as Tierra in Greek, is located on the west bank of the Nile, south of Abydos. At this point, the river turns sharply to the east. Hathor was a well-known deity in the region, so the temple was named after her. Hathor is the goddess of the sacred cow in Egypt. The construction of this temple began in earnest during the Middle Kingdom.
The Middle Kingdom made these changes. During the New Kingdom, the temple was restored. Around this time, Thutmose III reworked a folk rite called the “Escape of Hathor.” The temple was repaired when the Ptolemies were in power, but it was not completed until 185 years later when Tiberius was emperor of Rome.
On the temple, towers are the names of the emperors who ruled Egypt in the first century AD. This indicates that this building is from the Ptolemaic dynasty. The Ptolemies said that where the current temple is being built, there was a temple from the time of the pharaohs of the Old Kingdom. One of the most famous Egyptian deities, Hathor, had a temple built by the Ptolemies.
This goddess appeared in the form of a cow, a woman with a cow’s head, and, more recently, in the form of a woman’s head with a cow’s ears. She was a famous goddess who had a temple at Dendera, but her fame went beyond the religious community where she was worshiped.
Description of the parts of the temple:
The temple consists of several different parts. The Great Hall of the Columns is the first building. It has 18 pillars and is filled with paintings of Hathor’s heads in their original vivid colors. On each of the seven parts of, posts that raise the ceiling is an image of the sky.
They remind me of the scenes used to decorate most temples during the Ptolemies’ time. Nothing else in Dendera Temple has kept these sights in such good condition as the ceiling of the Hypostyle Hall.
Each of the six pillars in the Second Hall of Columns had a luxurious top. Three small rooms on each side of the temple could be used as vaults or to store things related to the ceremonies.
Dendera temple antechamber is an excellent place to see. It has four rows of reliefs showing devotees making offerings to the deities who lived inside. The pharaoh and the high priest were the only people who managed to enter the Golden Boat Sanctuary. Here the boat of the Egyptian goddess Hathor was kept. The temple also contains underground rooms where his valuables were buried or kept.
