Saint George Church:

Coptic Cairo is a neighborhood that is near Old Cairo. Records from the past show that Coptic Cairo was the first place where Christians settled in central Egypt. This was in the 10th century. But other sources say that the city was founded a long time ago.

You can also use the term “Coptic Cairo” in the same way. Copt means “Egyptian Christian,” and it’s used to show that these people have a unique way of looking at Christianity because they came from Egypt.

Location:

From the city’s financial district to Saint George’s Church, which is in the Old Cairo neighborhood in the heart of Old Coptic Cairo, takes about half an hour.

Since it was built in a small Christian settlement in the 10th century, it has been kept in perfect shape. There are also a lot of other churches in the area.

History:

Ibn Marwan, who was in charge of Egypt at the time, gave the order to build the Greek Orthodox Church of Saint George.

Al-History Maqrizi’s of the Patriarchs of the Coptic Church has a description of the church. It was finished by Athanasius during the reign of Ibn Marwan.

In the middle of the 20th century, the church burned down, and it was rebuilt using the original plans, which did not include cupolas.

The Qa’at Al-Irsan, also called the Wedding Hall, is part of the complex. It was built in the 13th or 14th century and is 15 meters long and 12 meters wide. Architecturally, it is not very interesting.

Today’s four-columned churches are also not decorated in any way that makes them stand out.

The intricate tracery and carvings in the hall reminded me of the style of several Cairo mansions from the time of the Mamelukes. These houses were built around the same time that the hall was built.
