In Egypt, there are a lot of places to go and things to do. There is also a lot of unique and delicious local food to try, great hospitality, and true Egyptian friends. In Egypt, there are a lot of exciting places to visit besides the Pyramids of Giza, the Great Sphinx, the wet and eastern banks of the Nile, and the various Nile cruises of 2020. However, it is no less important than any of the other things that have been discussed.

The Citadel of Qaitbey, although it is no less critical, is often forgotten by people in Alexandria. It was built on the Mediterranean coast as a fortified stronghold, but now most people go there to see it. Today, we will not only talk about how vital the Citadel of Qaitbey is in Alexandria, Egypt, but also take a look at the area around it, learn about its history, and how it was built.

  • The geographical location of Qauitbay
  • The historical significance of Qauitbay
  • Construction of Qauitbay

The fortress of Qaitbay is located at the following location:

Unsurprisingly, the Qaiitbay fort is located in Egypt, near Alexandria, a port city on the southern coast of the Mediterranean Sea. The castle of Qaitbay is in the beautiful town of Alexandria, and it was built by Sultan Al-Ashraf al-Din Quit Bay in 1477 AD.

The Fort of Qaitbay has a long and exciting history.

The world-famous Lighthouse of Alexandria is inside the UNESCO World Heritage Site Citadel of Qaitbay, which is on the eastern half of Pharos Island’s eastern point. Even though the lighthouse had just been renovated in a big way, it was the last to be destroyed when an earthquake hit.

Around 1480, the Circassian and Mameluke Sultan Al-Ashraf Al-Ashraf had the Qaitbay Fortifications built where they are now. He did this to protect the city from the Turks. During the Mameluke, Ottoman, and modern times, Qaitbay Fort was an important defensive structure. However, it stopped being used when the British bombed Alexandria, and it didn’t get back to its former glory until the early 1900s, when it underwent many repairs.

Even more impressive than the Citadel of Qaitbay itself is the story of how Sultan Al-Ashraf Qaitbay built it. He was a young man who kept getting bought and sold in Egypt until he was finally set free. After he was freed, Qaitbay continued to work for the government in different roles, such as army commander and Sultan.

After Qaitbay’s 29-year rule, the Citadel of Qaitbay got different amounts of care and attention. Some periods, like those of Mohamed Aly and Sultan Qanush Al-Ghuri, were the cathedral’s “golden era.” In the 20th century, the Ministry of Defense fixed up the Qaitbay fort, a maritime museum with a water view.

The world-famous Lighthouse of Alexandria is inside the UNESCO World Heritage Site Citadel of Qaitbay, which is on the eastern half of Pharos Island’s eastern point. The famous building was the last to be taken down, and it was destroyed by an earthquake right after a lot of work was done to fix it.

The Circassian and Mameluke Sultan Al-Ashraf Al-Ashraf ordered Qaitbay Fortifications to be built around 1480 on the site of the current Citadel to protect the city from the Turks. After the British bombed Alexandria, the Qaitbay Fort stopped being used. In the 20th century, it was fixed up and given new life, becoming an essential defensive structure again.

Sultan Al-Ashraf Qaitbay, who ordered the building of the Qaitbay Citadel, had a fascinating past. He was a young man who kept getting bought and sold in Egypt until he was finally set free. After he was freed, Qaitbay continued to work for the government in different roles, such as army commander and Sultan.

Qaitbay’s construction was divided into two phases:

Sultan Qaitbay rose to power because he was known as a passionate supporter of the arts and a leader in architecture. At the time, Qagmas Al-Eshaqy was in charge of building structures. He made several vital areas in places like Mecca and Damascus, and the Qaitbay Fort is the most famous.

People say that Qaitbay spent more than 100,000 golden dinars on Qagmas Al-projects Eshaqy’s because Qagmas Al-Eshaqy was humble and intelligent.

According to Islamic tradition, work on the coastal fort started in Rabi Ul Awal 882H. During his time at qaitBay, he is said to have given the order to build the castle when he went to Alexandria to look at the lighthouse. When the building is finished, in the month of Shaaban 884 H, Qaitbay will move back to the site. Because of this, Qaitbay is now a popular place for tourists to visit.

During the 20th century, Qaitbay went through many renovations, but the fort’s historical military and strategic importance were never stressed. The building is now a maritime museum, and people don’t pay much attention to the fact that it used to be a military and strategic stronghold.
